My boyfriend and I stayed at the WestCord City Centre Hotel during our recent visit to Amsterdam. We weren’t familiar with the area, but from what I’d read and been told, any accommodation within the inner canal belt was a pretty good bet. So I made my way to the trusty hotels.com website and had a look at the hotels on the map. We finally decided on WestCord City Centre Hotel because of its great location.
Where would I find it?
The hotel is a 5-minute walk from Amsterdam Central station, although it is possible to get a tram if you aren’t sure of the way, have heavy bags and don’t want to walk, or just generally can’t be bothered. We had a bit of trouble getting our bearings once stepping out the station, but then managed to find our way with no trouble. With respects to the rest of Amsterdam and the sights, this place is close enough to walk to pretty much everything, but far enough away that it’s still quiet. You could be at Dam Square in 5 minutes, or the Red Light District in 10 minutes.
We arrived early, having got a morning flight to Amsterdam. And there is nothing more annoying than getting to a city early in the day, and being tied down with a suitcase for the best part of the day. Luckily, the hotel has a secure luggage room where we were able to leave our bags, giving us the chance to grab a bite for lunch and wander bag-free before check-in time.
So the room was like…?
As we made our way back after lunch, we were informed by the lovely staff that they’d managed to get our room ready for us before check-in time – woop! – and we made our way upstairs to freshen up. Our room was a decent size – as in there was plenty of room to move, but we weren’t likely to throw any parties in there. Comfortable furnishings, a room facing the front of the hotel, and a lovely modern bathroom. I’m not sure why, but I tend to judge a place by the state of the bathrooms, and ours was really clean, not at all cramped and stylish. Who doesn’t love a stylish bathroom?
Because we’d had such an early start, we thought it best to fit in a quick nap before heading out again, and that was when we realised just how much of a bargain we’d gotten. Not only does the WestCord have a great location, but the beds are to die for. I would honestly say it is the comfiest bed I have ever had the joy to sleep on, and I was more than happy at the end of the day to leave the sightseeing and rest my weary head on the little slice of heaven they called a bed.
A girl’s got to eat!
Breakfast is offered in the fancy little restaurant downstairs, although I can’t comment on it as we didn’t try it out, other than it was quite pricey. We preferred to take advantage of the location and take a 5 minute walk to a nearby bakery to enjoy some local (odd) baked goods.
And to top it all off…Free Wi-Fi…oh yeahhh!! It’s nice to be able to take a city break and have some time away from the internet, facebook, twitter, etc etc etc. But when you want to find out some sneaky local tips about the area, check out some tips in a blog or just find out what time the Anne Frank museum is open ‘til, it sure is handy to have the internet available. And for free!
Would I recommend this hotel?
I would indeed! I couldn’t fault this hotel when we stayed, and the great location would have been enough on it’s own, without the world’s most comfortable beds! Top it off with lovely, polite and helpful staff, and free Wi-Fi, well I’d have stayed much longer if I could have!
