On our recent trip to Palma, we wanted the best of both worlds – interesting city break and lazy days lounging by the pool. I thought it was a bit ambitious, and didn’t hold much hope of finding an affordable hotel in a great location with a pool. But then I stumbled upon TRYP Palma Bellver.
Where would I find it?
It’s a lovely walk from the main city centre to the port. As you wander along, the harbour is on your left with more boats than you could flap a sail at, and on the right are the hotels, bars and restaurants. A mere 5-10 minute walk from the centre on this road, TRYP Palma Bellver benefits from stunning harbour views from the front of the hotel, and a sideways glance at the impressive Bellver Castle from the back.
So the room was like…?
We booked a standard room, which meant we were looking out over the back street, with the hills and castle in the background. I’m a sucker for a great view, and while it may not have been the harbour, I love watching people go about their day. We actually had a super spacious balcony, and we were perfectly located for the late afternoon sun – cue a cheeky sunbathe on the balcony!
The room itself was very comfortable, with plenty of space. As well as a double bed, there was a desk, TV and mini fridge. The absolute essential for me on a trip away is a safe, and if it’s hot, then air-conditioning too. Thankfully, both were available, and for free too which was a nice bonus.
I love a modern bathroom, and this place did not disappoint. The huge mirror was a welcome feature (apart from first thing in the morning), and there was even a bidet! I usually struggle to wash my hair in hotels because the shower isn’t powerful enough, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a power shower tucked away in the corner.
We spent a lot of time walking around Palma and exploring, and come evening we were absolutely shattered. Thankfully, the bed was really comfortable, and the pillows even more so! I was actually surprised to find a double bed in the room, as most hotels advertise a double bed and you just end up with two twin beds pushed together.
A girl’s got to eat!
Breakfast is served in the spacious restaurant, where there’s the option to eat on the terrace overlooking the pool and harbour. We also saw plenty of people enjoying a spot of lunch there too. The surrounding area is home to a number of restaurants and cafes, and we didn’t fancy spending €18 each on breakfast (€9 in advance) so took a wander down the road and found a cafe offering a croissant and coffee for €3 instead – bargain!
Tell me there’s a pool?!
Of course! The winning factor for this hotel was the fact that it had a pool, meaning we’d be able to enjoy days exploring the city and afternoons lounging by the pool. The only downside was the number of sun beds – if they added a few more sun beds to the terrace it’d work wonders. We came back a couple of times from sightseeing and there’d be no sun beds available. But we did manage to nab a couple on our last day to fit in a few hours soaking up the sun before heading back to sunny England.
Free Wi-Fi is always a nice bonus, and Wi-Fi that actually works is even better! Aside from that, the hotel itself is uber modern, with attractive function rooms available. There’s also the option to upgrade to a sea-view room which faces out over the pool and harbour. The views are absolutely stunning, and from some rooms you’d even be able to see Palma Cathedral.
On our last day we weren’t heading to the airport until the afternoon, and wanted to spend the morning chilling out by the pool. While there weren’t any promises of one, we were able to use a courtesy room to freshen up before heading out. It definitely makes all the difference when you have to travel a distance.
Would I recommend this hotel?
If you’re looking for a comfortable city break at a reasonable price, then I would definitely recommend this hotel. We couldn’t find any other hotels with a pool, in such a good location for such a reasonable price. When I’m back in Palma, I’ll be looking to stay here again.
The important stuff!
